Following the release of the report from the Councillors Commission, Stephen Williams MP has welcomed calls for a fairer electoral system which allows 16 year olds to vote.
The report set out 61 proposals to encourage more people to get involved in local politics. These proposals could offer the chance for 16 year olds to vote, as well as additional benefits for individuals willing to give up their time to be councillors.
"In this country 16 year olds are considered mature enough to marry, to pay taxes, and even to risk their lives to fight for our country. It is ridiculous therefore that they are not considered 'responsible' enough to vote."
"Far too many young people feel alienated from politics. The system needs to be revitalised, and lowering the voting age would be a very good start."
