The event was compered by Sir Ian McKellen a founding member of Stonewall. The Citation said: 'Stephen Williams has proved himself an energetic parliamentarian."
Although Stephen narrowly missed out on the title, speaking after the awards he said: 'I am delighted and honoured to have been nominated for this award. This ceremony highlighted the tremendous achievements made by individuals and groups in opposing discrimination, prejudice and intolerance against the gay community'.
'I hope my nomination will further help the spread of acceptance and equality for all people within 21st century Britain'.
Stephen has highlighted a range of issues important to the gay community most recently helping launch the Liberal Democrat campaign to end homophobic bullying in schools.
