Room for improvement in tackling cancer - Stephen Williams MP

Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West and member of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) today commented on the release of a Committee report addressing the quality of cancer treatment and care in the NHS.

Mr Williams said: "Whilst this report highlights many positive aspects in cancer services the experience of cancer patients is still not as good as it could be.

"40% of cancer patients still wait more than two weeks to see a specialist following referral by their GP. Clinicians are often failing to provide patients with vital information about their condition. Over three quarters of cancer patients are not being informed of available financial support."

"The treatment of prostate cancer, which is one of the most common cancers and kills over 10,000 men each year, is also still regarded as low priority. Only 34% of patients with prostate cancer receive information on relevant support compared with 70% of breast cancer patients. This inequitable treatment is completely unacceptable and the government needs to address the imbalance in the care of cancer patients."
