Stephen Williams, who is also the Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesman for Public Health, said "The government has a responsibility to do whatever it can to cut the rates of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and reduce the number of AIDS sufferers. Making condoms cheaper would be a really simple and effective first step to achieving this."
However, in an answer to a recent written question from Stephen Williams, the Paymaster General and MP for Bristol South, Dawn Primarolo ruled out any change to the current rate.
Stephen Williams is due to chair a debate in the Commons on Wednesday on behalf of the all party group on HIV/AIDS.
Stephen Williams said "The fact that there is a global AIDS crisis should not diminish the fact that we must ensure everything is done to tackle the problem in the UK as well. It is easy for us to become complacent because of the high profile that the disease took on during the 1980s, but every new generation needs to be educated as to the appalling dangers and ways to protect themselves."
