The Lib Dem Council has produced detailed guidance to support local schools in their efforts to stamp out all forms of verbal and physical abuse.
Stephen said "Bullying can destroy the lives and the education of young people if not properly tackled - resulting in effects that can last well into adulthood. It is an issue that has all too often has been swept under the carpet. It is vital that schools and the Council work together to protect children from abuse and to enable learning to take place in a safe environment.
"I welcome the fact that the Council has issued this document and will be pleased to attend its launch. The issues are complex and emotive and often there is disagreement as to the best approach. As far as I am concerned the needs of the victim of bullying should come before the needs of the bully. But both need to be tackled in a constructive way that reduces harm to children and helps bullies stop their unacceptable behaviour. Local politicians of all persuasions should get behind the Council's aim of reducing bullying in Bristol's schools. This is not an issue for cheap political point scoring," he added.
