Stephen Williams, who contested the Bristol West constituency at last year's general election, has been re-selected by local Liberal Democrats as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
At a hustings meeting held during the past week Stephen, a former leader of the Liberal Democrats on Bristol City Council, achieved a decisive majority over four other top class short-listed potential candidates in a ballot of local party members.
Commenting on the result, chairman of Bristol West Liberal Democrats Cllr David Kitson (Bishopston Ward) said, "Stephen Williams fought an excellent campaign at the last general election moving the Liberal Democrats up to second place in this key marginal seat in the West's major city. He now has the backing of all members to complete the task."
"Our constituency is one of the first group of seats in the country to select its Liberal Democrat PPC. The speed with which this has been done points up the importance the party nationally and regionally places on Bristol West."
"Labour's vulnerability in Bristol is indicated by the Liberal Democrats' sustained and steady increase in strength on the City Council - marked by yet more gains at last month's local elections. The Conservatives, however, have stalled and seem unable to take advantage of Labour's weakening position in the City."
"Under the leadership of Stephen Williams, Bristol West Liberal Democrats enter the next period of the development of our local organisation with great confidence."
